Staying Safe and Comfortable at Home This Winter

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, but it also brings extra challenges, especially for older adults and those living with health concerns. Cold temperatures, icy walkways, and shorter days can increase the risk of falls, illness, and isolation. With a few simple precautions, seniors can stay safe, warm, and comfortable at home all season long.
1. Prevent slips and falls
Icy sidewalks and driveways are one of the biggest winter hazards. Make sure walkways are cleared of snow and treated with salt or sand. Inside the home, keep floors dry, especially near entryways where melted snow can collect. Non-slip mats and supportive footwear can make a big difference.
2. Keep the home warm and safe
Maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature is important for both health and peace of mind. Aim to keep the thermostat set to at least 68°F. Check that space heaters are in good condition and kept away from curtains, bedding, and furniture. It’s also a good idea to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly during the winter months.
3. Dress in layers
Layered clothing helps trap body heat and allows for easy adjustments throughout the day. Warm socks, sweaters, and blankets can help prevent chills, especially for seniors who may be more sensitive to cold.
4. Stay active indoors
Cold weather can make it tempting to stay seated for long periods, but gentle movement helps maintain strength, balance, and circulation. Simple stretches, short walks around the home, or light exercises recommended by a healthcare provider can help keep the body active.
5. Keep up with nutrition and hydration
It’s common to feel less thirsty in the winter, but staying hydrated is just as important as in warmer months. Warm beverages like tea or soup can help. Balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein support overall health and immunity.
6. Stay connected
Shorter days and colder weather can lead to feelings of isolation. Regular phone calls, video chats, or visits from family, friends, or caregivers can make a big difference in emotional well-being.
