Winter Wellness Tips for Seniors at Home

ree

Winter brings extra challenges for older adults, especially when it comes to staying warm, safe, and prepared at home. A little planning can go a long way in preventing cold-weather issues. Here are a few practical ways families and caregivers can support seniors through the season.

Keep the Home Warm and Safe

Cold temperatures can be risky for seniors, especially those with chronic conditions. Make sure heating systems are working well, seal drafts, and use space heaters with care. In case of a winter power outage, keep extra blankets, warm clothing, and flashlights in one dedicated spot. Avoid using candles or any indoor fuel-burning heaters, which increase fire and carbon monoxide risks.

Plan Ahead for Power Outages

Winter storms can interrupt heat, electricity, and communication. Preparing early helps seniors stay safe at home. Keep a simple emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, bottled water, ready-to-eat foods, a manual can opener, and a portable phone charger. Refill prescriptions early and keep at least 5–7 days of medications on hand. If medical equipment relies on electricity, ask your utility company about medical priority status and discuss backup plans with caregivers.

Protect Against Dry Skin

Indoor heat often leads to dryness, which can cause irritation. Encourage gentle moisturizing, warm (not hot) showers, and consider a humidifier to make the air more comfortable.

Prevent Slips and Falls

Ice and snow make winter one of the highest-risk times for falls. Keep walkways salted, wear shoes with good traction, and make sure hallways and stairs are well lit. During an outage, keep flashlights by the bed and bathroom to limit nighttime movement.

Stay Connected Through the Season

Shorter days and bad weather can make it harder for seniors to get out. Regular check-ins, light activities at home, and help from caregivers can make a big difference in mood and overall well-being. Have a communication plan for outages, including a written list of important phone numbers and a neighbor who can check in if service goes down.

Know When to Get Help

If the home becomes too cold, medical equipment stops working, or someone feels unsafe staying home, help should be called right away. Local warming centers and emergency shelters open during major outages.

Winter can be a comfortable and safe season when the right preparations are in place. If your family needs support this winter, Attentive Care is here to help.
